tin the solderig iron tip and whatever you're soldering; it makes much more efficient heat transfer

15w is best for electronics because you don't want it to get too hot. they take 5-10 minutes to heat up

Yeah my bad. Sorry im pretty new actually doing lots with soldering, usually only little things. But yea so after i let it heat up last night around 1AM i decided to try and let it heat up extra long. And I scraped off some black stuff that was on the tip and tinned it and grabbed an old mobo and practiced attaching wires to a small chip and it worked very well after being heated up. So then I thought well if its working here now maybe itll work there now! But then went to bed.

So I'll probably have time to test it saturday. But the exact thing im trying to desolder is the 4Pin connector that hooks the mobo to the power supply. And the USB/Ilink post and the AV post All of which I no longer need.
And are obviously a pertruding waste of space! Thanks for the tips ill be tryin them all saturday...

if your very shure you dont need them and dont want to hang on to them then carefully cut them off its faster than desodering

Yes but I do like having the convinient holes to put the leads to wire the mobo to the screen. Having those premade holes secures the solder much easier in my opinion. Or maybe im just lazy. ANyhow I'm giving it a shot right now..

If you cut the connectors' pins then desolder what's left, it will be easier, because you only have to heat one pin at a time, rather than all of them.

Alright i got all the AV wires soldered and labeled without destruction XD.

As for the power connector your idea sounds pretty good because all 4 at once is pretty impossible at 15W and even one at a time is hard because the solder is coated so thick! I'll use my dremel on it tomorrow when everyone in my house isnt asleep  . They may become very angry if i decided to start dremeling off pieces at random.

Oh yeah and the optical connector came off no problem.

for the record, another common cause of an iron not being hot enough is the tip not being screwed in tight enough.. not just the screw that holds in the tip.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

Are you using Desoldering Braid? Get it at RadioShack. It helps SO MUCH!
