Replace Xbox DVD drive with SD card slot

Post by Knocks » Wed Aug 12, 2009 12:41 am

I would like to get rid of my Xbox DVD drive but want to have some sort of removable media capability in it. Is an IDE SD/SDHC reader a possibility?

You could just take out the DVD Drive and replace the Hard Drive with CF Cards or a larger hard drive.

You will have to have a Modchip or flash your TSOP first, however.

My Xbox is fully modded already. I want to have both a hard drive and an SD reader.

Well I suppose that is still possible. Just get a CF to 3.5" IDE Adapter and connect it to the DVD Drive's IDE cable.

Yes, I know those would be the steps :D

Has anyone tried this? Would it be powered correctly? Would an SD card behave like a bootable Xbox DVD if formatted as DVD video or Xbox game DVD?

An SD card wouldn't work. Notice Harshboy is saying CF, meaning a compact flash card.
These things run in parallel, like the DVD drive and the Hard Drive for the Xbox. An SD card is serial, meaning it would not work or it would be ridiculously slow because you would have to convert the serial to parallel.

I've seen SD to IDE adapter's before, but you'd almost get more space with just your stock xbox hard drive. I believe the only way you can run two hard drives is if you are booting linux, but I haven't tried it so I don't know for sure.

Yes, but they're slow and are thus not worth it.
If I understand correctly, this guy wants to play games off his SD card. That would mean whenever the disc is suppost to be checked, laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag would be prevelent. Since the Xbox only has 64 MB of RAM, it's not like you can boot the game into RAM either.

Like I said, you would be better of just sticking with the stock xbox hard drive and running another 80 gb hard drive.

CompactFlash is the way to go, although you couldn't boot directly off of it. The hard drive would have an OS on it that would dig through the CF card for games, etc.

Ya, unless you have a really old one, like me. The access times are not that great, as far as I can recall. Perhaps better than an SD card, but you should use the new Ultra Speed ones. Those are awesome.

1) I don't need two hard drives, I want removable media on the second IDE port

2) If CF works, then I don't see why an SD to IDE adapter will not. It has worked on much older systems.

He didn't say they won't work - he said they wouldn't work well. If you insist, go for it and tell us how it goes.

So is the point of this removable media? You could always just build a usb adapter, and use most flash drives up to 4GB. Its kind of slow, but then again an sd card would probably be slow too.
