Hey, My 360's DVD drive died, and since the HD-DVD addon is dirt cheap now, can you boot games from HDDVD.
Before they are all gone, please.

According to Wikipedia (your #1 source for mostly-accurate information) it can't. Sorry.

Besides, it's limited to USB speeds. You can probably trade your 360 in with Microsoft for a working unit for free.

Maybe the Xbox 360 Blu-Ray drive (external or possibly built in) will have that support. I know they were behind HD-DVD, but it's a dying format. Microsoft will have to add Blu-Ray support eventually. I mean, they're not that stupid... Now even Paramount and Dreamworks have jumped ship.

When I got my HD-DVD drive (which I still stand behind), that was one of the first things I tried. But yeah, USB speeds keep it from being anything good.

Bico, I don't see M$ switching to Blu-Ray. They have a great download service for movies and TV shows now, and people seem to be making great use of it. I don't think supporting Blu-Ray is needed.

Then why did they bother making the HD-DVD drive, especially if it's on a relatively slow connection (making it near useless for games)?

Sure they have digital downloads, but that limits the media you buy to just one unit: your 360. You can't just pop the disc out and bring it to your friend's house for movie night; you either have to bring your entire 360 or log in with your gamertag on theirs and re-download the movie.

Besides, call me old-fashioned but I prefer having physical media. Sure it doesn't have the same instant gratification factor downloads do, but at least you know it will work on just about anything with little hassle.

I prefer physical media too, but I see M$ going away from that. Just my opinion.
