n360 or the xbox64

Post by mrmello » Tue Apr 12, 2011 7:31 pm

So i'm designing a hybrid. Basically a 64 built into a 360 case, but stealthily so it appears to be an xbox still. currently i have everything in place and mounted well. problem i'm running into is i didn't have an expansion pack. So i went out and bought one, of course it was 3rd party. now the problem i have is the expansion pack rises about 2 cm too high. is there any way to trim this down, as i'm trying to keep the top cover as stock as possible.

You can. You can cut up to the holes towards the top and it should work.

its a RamExpander. so the red topper is connected to a metal plate extending all the way to the chip on the bottom.(possibly an attempted heatsink as it runs to a grate on the top) is that still able to be done as you suggested?

Oh, well that may be different. You can always take that heatsink off and put your own on, mounting directly to the chips and getting it out of the way of the case. If you want it to fit, you will need to remove it from the plastic.

So it doesn't appear to do anything. Are there really any risks to just removing the chip from the case and inserting it there?

No, but you'll want to heatsink or it will get damaged by heat.

so by trimming the top disperser off the heatsink, it will still function?

Yeah, but you may want to replace the whole sink altogether.

As a point of comparison, i just held the new memory up to the jumper pack. the jumper pack is the right profile for the case. would it be possible to open the jumper pack and swap mem cards?

The thing is, you dont need to swap anything. You can plug in either without any casing on them. if you take it apart it should fit. If not ,you can trim it.

Well earlier i thought you suggested keeping it in a case instead of straight up plug in?

No, i was saying remove it, and that would allow it to fit in the 360 case.

so, it successfully transplanted into the jumper case, took a little plastic cutting, and it fit into the heat sink designs well.
