Re: n64 portable project: rainbow 64
if you go the pocket battery route I can recommend these: 12V 3500mAh Lithium Battery Pack With Auto Charger
just make sure you use a switching regulator to get your 3.3v and 7.4v .. if you do you'll get a nice theoretical time/usage increase. will kinda act like a 5000mAh battery.
I recommend this battery because it's all nice in a little metal enclosure with a power port that you could just run a cable from into your portable. it also comes with a smart charger.
Oh and also, your current design will overheat I think. if you have some holes above the screen, and make the hole where your cartridge relocation goes through a bit bigger. and then have a little fan on the back it should be fine. cause then the air will come in and down over the n64 board and screen, and through the hole in the middle of your case, and then exits through the fan.
Have fun!

The N64 doesn't need a fan.
NO MATTER WHAT.
NO MATTER WHAT.

in a small case with no airflow, yes, it does. those chips get hot, if the hot air has nowhere to go then everything will overheat.. ventilation101
Re: n64 portable project: rainbow 64
....but, they are cheap, small, use a negligible amount of energy, and if the space inside is tight and the airflow is not good, there is no harm in playing it safe and including one.Basement_Modder wrote:The N64 doesn't need a fan.

I will use this regulator
but..... some idea of a smaller regulator?

Search on the texas instruments website for: PTN78020 and PTH08080
In my portable I'm using the PTH08080 to get 3.3v, and the PTN78020 to get 7.4v
these things are tiny, the PTH08080 is about 1cm x 1cm
you can get free samples from the texas instruments website

Re: n64 portable project: rainbow 64
looks good, although you'll have to have the fan at the very bottom on the back to allow enough room for the cartridge. Also, you want the cool air getting sucked in to pass over the whole board(s) so fan at very back-bottom is your best bet. Looking good so far, planning is definitely the most important step!
