Air64 Worklog

Post by Corporal Awesome » Sat Jun 05, 2010 8:11 pm

Why, yes, good sir! It does appear I am working on a new N64 portable! How did you guess?

Anyways, yes, I am building an N64 Portable which I have christened the N64Boy+ Air64. Actually, not even building yet, but in the process of buying the console. I will begin the actual mod in about a week. This will feature integrated (but relocated) controller ports like the L64, and will (if all goes well) be small enough to ACTUALLY fit in your pocket. The diagram is shown below.

And yes, this is my first mod.

Italicized items are unsure.

Nope. It sure does sound like it, though. The 64Boy is like a Gameboy, but this is more like a Gameboy Advance. Not saying that the 64Boy is low-tech, just by the overall inspiration.

It should be N64Boy Advance, not N64Boy+. Just saying it'd go better with the design.

Why not call it the n64 advanced, I can guarantee there will be a lot of confusion if you name it that.

This is one of the problems of having so many portables on the same site.
Anyways,
1) Yes, I considered N64Boy Advance, but decided that would imply I made the 64 Boy. (And I didn't). Plus, my design is a little more boxy than the GBA.
2) This is not trying to be VERY small, just nicely sized so that it fits in your hand and pocket nicely, but has enough space to allow for controller ports so that four players can use it on a TV.
3) It will probably look like a mashup of the Sixtyfree and L64, but it's pretty much my design, except I took inspiration from others. So those who want to criticize by saying I "stole the ______'s design" don't have an excuse.

For clarification, I am including notebook scans of the design.

It's isn't design theft. It's inspiration. There are only so many ways to skin a cat, anyway.

Ok, I'm going to make this very simple and change the name to "Air64". That settles everything.

Moving on, still waiting for my eBay bid to finish up. Grr, have to wait till Tuesday. Oh, well.

Also, you're going to have trouble putting controller slots there. they take of a lot of space inside.

You do know that your drawing is very small for a N64p, right? It'll require a good amount of chopping to get the N64 board small enough. Wait until you get the parts, then you'll see what is possible.
If you don't get the N64 from ebay, I have a few I could sell you.

I think this is a little bit of overconfidence and a lack of understanding on how to make a portable, he said this would be his first mod. probably doesn't get what this mod actually requires.

Yeah, I really don't know what to expect when I make this. I'll chop it down a little, but the design is not definite. It's more of a guideline. I might make one that is closer to the drawing once I have done a couple more mods.

And thanks for your offer, vskid, I might buy one if it all doesn't work out.

You might want to think about using a breakout controller box to save space inside the portable. Also, LOB64.
