Can it be done?

Well the Dreamcast Devbox has the Dreamcast GD-rom mounted in a tray that slides everything out. You can do it but you need a tray that can carry the whole thing (motors, lens and lasers) and extend the wires that connect to the controller card for the GD-rom.

nope, the dreamcast discs are a little different and hold more space. AFAIK they cannot be read with a normal cdrom.

The only part of a Dreamcast Giga-Disc that can be read by a CD-rom is the very interior and that only holds the movie media. The GDs are propriatary and are too big to be cds and too small to be DVD. You need to use the orginal GD-rom from the Dreamcast if you want to read the game data.

AFAIK= "As far as I know"
oh, and he said that in perfectly resonable english. If you can't understand that, you shouldn't try and mod the gd rom drive.
