N64 Laptop
Moderator:Moderators
Things I need to get:
Nintendo 64 w/ cables, and controller
LCD screen w/ AV input
Laptop Hinges
Styrene
battery
Heatsinks
Vacuum Former (halfway done)
Questions:
1.) Do I need to put Video and audio amps on it?
2.) Would it be better to use heatsinks with a fan? How to you hook them up?
Tell me what else I need. I excluded buttons, switches etc, but I will be getting those.
I'm a beginner, and I will most likely be needing some help along the way. I have been looking around the site for a couple months, and recently got a n account. I'm sure everything will start to make more sense as I start work on it.

Re: Starting Work On N64 Laptop
1) depends on your screen. ON a ps1 screen, no(best one eva(I gots one))
2) both is best. You just need to get the right voltage going to the fan you buy. On the box you get it in/sticker on it, it will normally tell you how much voltage/current is needed.

Ok. Ill post the specs on screen when I get it. Also, where to you buy the heatsinks? I am fine with fanless ones that go over the chips.mako321 wrote:1) depends on your screen. ON a ps1 screen, no(best one eva(I gots one))

Actual Answers to your questions:
1)You shouldn't ever need a video amp unless you killed your RF for more retro consoles. And since the N64 doesn't use an RF box, you don't need to do that.
The audio amp will only be needed if your screen doesn't come with speakers. If it does, then you're set.
2) For the N64 you should definitely use both. Try taking a fan off an old unused graphics card, as usually they are small enough for a portable. I took mine out of a laptop, but not many people have those just laying around. You can build a heat sink yourself, otherwise you could just pull them off an old motherboard.

Re: Starting Work On N64 Laptop
Ok well my screen does not come with its own speakers, so I will need an audio amp. As for the heatsinks, how do I wire the fan up, and where should they be positioned on the board?
Also.. I don't have any random motherboards laying around. Is there somewhere I can buy heatsinks elsewhere?

Re: Starting Work On N64 Laptop
For the fan, the red wire is positive and the black wire is negative. If it has a third wire, you don't need to connect it. If it is 5v, you can connect it to the power regulator on the N64 motherboard. It is labeled 7805. The fan can be placed on top of the heatsink, but the best way is putting it at the back of the case and have it suck the hot air out. This means you don't get as much dust, but you do need a small vent in the front. You can build heatsinks yourself, use the original heatsink for the N64 (which is fine) or you can pull it off an old video card (again).BENFTW wrote:As for the heatsinks, how do I wire the fan up, and where should they be positioned on the board?

Ok two more questions..
1.) what thickness of styrene should I buy for vacuum forming (for the case) link
---answered---
2.) Could somebody direct me to a thin, relatively lightweight, long lasting battery I could use for my project that is 70$ or under.

Fan voltage is not picky. I'm using a 12v fan on a 7.4v battery and it works just fine.

Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!
Nothing all too exciting yet, but today I had time to take apart my N64.
Testing it out.. It works!
