New NESp worklog (codename: Mega Star)

Post by thewizdawg » Wed Feb 02, 2011 4:11 pm

Hi all,

I've been working on a new NES portable for about a month now and finally got to the point where I'm not embarrassed to post pics.

Specs:
Tiger Head-to-Head case
original NES mobo
3.5" LCD screen
internal 3000 mAh Li-Po batteries
overclock switch to go to 29.412 Mhz
rapid fire buttons
LM386 audio amp
1 speaker from PS1 lcd
low battery warning light

I basically copied the design from my Sega GENp, the Mega Tiger.

Here's the case. Same kind I used in my SNESp and Sega GENp.

Case after modding and primer-ed.

NES mobo with expansion slot removed and trimmed a bit. Also 72 pin adapter hacked up.
Image

Plastic standoffs installed in case to hold mobo.
Image

LM386 audio amp. Already tested and working. Same circuit used in my Sega GENp.
Image

I'm going to be using the controller board from this...

I plan on painting the case the same colors as my NOACp, blue and silver.

I've always loved your work, especially the way you do cases. This case looks promising as well, very clean. Keep it up!

Wired the 72 pin connector. I used hdd cable. Batteries going to sit under the cartridge connector.

OK I'm tired of looking at this on my dinner table, need to finish it up.

Case done.

Batteries and screen installed and system working.

Still need to install audio amp, low battery indicator, hookup overclock, and wire controls.

Hopefully I'll have this done sometime next weekend.

Nice. It looks really clean, I like it.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.

OK finally got the controls working. I was planning on using a 3rd party controller called Recoton that had a glob top but I fried it when I connected it to the board because the wires were the same colors as a Nintendo but the red wire(not white) was 5 volt and I didn't check until after I connected to system. :(. I didn't have another controller like this so I just recreated the NES max circuit on a pref board and the turbo buttons are working.

I re-did my audio amp because I was getting some distortion. The circuit I used can be found here...http://www.ece.ucsb.edu/yuegroup/Teachi ... /Lab1a.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Along with all the gory details of a LM386. The amp sounds great!

Almost finished.... just got a few small things to fix/add.

It only looks small cause the case is so big to accommodate the large NES mobo...a 3.5" LCD is plenty of picture for the 8-bit NES ;)
