N64 Advance

Post by Falco »

My first portable project. I've been working on this for a year, on and off, probably just short of a month of solid work as a tentative estimate.

I also used the rubber screwhole covers above the screen, but forgot to put them in until I made the video.

Stats:

5100 mAH Li-Poly Battery pack - Almost 3.5 hours of life
Unmodded 5" PSone screen
DS Lite speakers
RAM expansion
Headphone/AV out ports (with screen kill switch for TV use)
Full N64 controls (even though I broke the Dpad down connection)
External controller port with switch: internal and external as P1/P2, or external as P1

The host case was a GBA carrying case. Donor controllers include 3rd party Yobo N64, 1st party N64, 1st party GCN, 1st party PS1. I used a two part epoxy-like plastic bonder for case construction, it works wonderfully and is easy to use. The case didn't turn out as smooth as I would have liked in some parts, but I got kind of impatient near the end.

I learned a lot from this project and from reading about all the other projects on this site. It's been real fun. :D

R.I.P. My first two N64s and PSOne screen.

Very nice. Didn't have time to watch the video, but I like it. Does it have a spot for a rumble pack(forgot what that connector was called)?

No, there's no connection for a controller pak, no room. I was going to add a built in rumble, but had to trim the controller board too much in the end to even wire to it.

Awesome. I love me some purple portables. You did a great job. I've always seen those carrying cases and hoped someone would do something like this. It turned out great!

Thanks a lot guys. :D Creeping around these forums helped a lot when I got stuck. I'm just glad to finally be finished.

One of my friends gave me that case partly as a joke, but I wanted so bad to use it since I'd never seen one of them before, even though it ended up being a tight fit for the amount of trimming I did (which was barely any).

Hackaday loves it.

Most know I'm a critical poop egress when it comes to portables, especially N64 portables.
And while there's plenty I'd love to pick on, I'll try and be nice and say THANK YOU FOR GIVING IT ALL THE DAMN BUTTONS.
That's my biggest N64p peeve is when people leave out the D-Pad and L.
