Nintendo Sixty Faux worklog

Post by palmertech »

Well, been working on this beast for a while now. Thanks to some parts from ShockSlayer, I am almost done with the electronics, building my case now. Hopefully will have some pics tomorrow morning, if I can keep this case size, I will have officially the smallest N64p with built in battery of all time. :D Imagine a gamegear case, about 1/8 taller than normal.

Obviously this would be more interesting with pics, but just hold tight for a good 11 hours or so.

Also.....

A theme...... Hmmmm.... Probably not, but if I REALLY wanted to grind Mario into the dirt, I could make it Zelda themed. I honestly think it being in a gamegear would be theme enough.

(Funny note: This name was originally going to be bestowed on my iQue portable, as I was trying to figure out how to inject ROMs into a copy of the game kiosk software I obtained. Doing that appears to be possible, but too hard to be practical, and far beyond my skillset. The name was given to me by Skyone or Triton, I forget which. I asked permission to use it, whoever it was. )

@SS: I was indeed saving my 1337th post for "that", but I realized I could actually finish this within the timeframe of the contest, whereas "that" would take at least 2-3 weeks to finish (I actually plan on making a nice case. ;) )

As for your joystick, I am using the pot assembly, but your joystick is all grimy and black. So I am using my own cap.

I have the front controls bondo'd in, but I need to work on my screen before I mount the screen plate. Should I post pics anyway? IF anyone is interested in seeing it with no screen hole cut out properly, let me know, and I will go take some. :D

PICS!!!11

Here are a bunch of pics, screen cover not bondo'd in yet, and comparing it to a ZN40:

And don't worry, the bondo/putty/epoxy will not be left like that, that was just the "attach parts" stage, and I gave it a quick coat of black so I could see where I needed to smooth out next better. :D

Trying to decide if I should stick with my original goal of making a "100% compatible" N64p, or just make a lazy one. With a case this small, I may have to take the latter. ;) Also, I have yet to put the C buttons in.

Another bummer is that while I will have a headphone jack, my speakers are gonna have to be mono. :( Oh well, I dont think stereo is really even noticeable at that close distance.

And Mario, he did measure his, and according to him, yours is the smallest anyway (If you are telling the truth, that is. ;) )

And you still have the smallest Zelda themed portable!

Yeah the one he made because he was bored and made out of a plastic drawer and wood, lol. I didn't see any measurements for it.

Major awesomeness, I've been waiting for a project from you other than an already portable. Now it is an extremely small n64p! n64ps are the best projects ever, although since you will be entering in the compo, it will get more votes than mine. :o  oh well!

Yeah, I have a ton of REAL portables in progress, but the compact, well designed innards of already portable consumer electronic goods keeps distracting me.

Kinda funny reading all these old threads arguing about putting an N64p in a ZN4o case, and how it is impossible; I could practically drop my newly trimmed mobo in it, no problem.

And, a funny quote from ShockSlayer, N64 master, from a long while back:
palmertech wrote:My goal is to make the smallest COMPLETE n64p, and after that, an N64p in a gamegear (Which will lack all of these extra features)

And I defy you to say it is impossible.
ShockSlayer wrote:IT'S IMPOSSIBLE! EVEN AFTER SEEING SIFUF'S PORTABLE ITS STILL IMPOSSIBLE! WHY? CAUSE I DOUBT YER SKILLZ. RAWR!
SS

And here is the current gameplan:

1. Try and make this thing "complete"
2. Failing that, just finish it with most features.
3. Make a NEW bigger one with ALL N64 features.
4. Make an UBER SMALL N64p!

Most N64p's have a central mobo, with controls on the side. If you made a portrait style N64p with a 3.5" screen on top, and controls on the bottom, batteries on backside bottom and cart slot on top, you could have an amazingly small N64! For now, though, this is good.

I just noticed that you are using a gamecube joystick, but will you be using third party buttons or official buttons?
also, how long have you been working on this? is it compo eligible?
