N64 PORTABLE COMPLETE! - Come see pics/vid..more comin soon!

Post by mchammer »

Hey there fellow followers of the benheck forums!!

Just wanted to share my first attempt at portablising a console. Have always been a fan of my N64. Truly addictive console action!! Still holds my attention after all these years. (ahhhh the memories of Goldeneye Multiplayer...)

Key Project Info:
7" LCD screen
10.5V NiMH 3500MAh Battery Pack
Custom Plastic/PVC Case (Hand cut and finished)
Approx Dimensions - 250mmx180mmx40mm
Weight - Dont know yet - will get back to you

Notes regarding pics below - put down some garble telling you basic funtionality. Apologies for the first pic....bit blury. I got some small vids of the unit in operation - will post them when i find a good host for them (any suggestions greatly appreciated).

BTW if anyone has any questions or comments regarding anything please feel free to post or pm me. Will post more pics if u need.

Just a bit of info bout me:
Im an electronic engineer/mechanical engineer from australia. After stumbling across ben's website I decided to put my skills to something a lil different. My brother (also mech eng - he designs engine blocks) and I are looking into manufacturing (milling/cnc) a complete portable case from heavy duty plastic in a kind of prodution line. Similar to ben's cases using cnc, but the WHOLE unit (except the backing plate or course) on a largish scale. We are going to see if the idea is feasable with other consoles and adaptable for different screens. Not sure if there's a big enough market. Will keep you all updated as we look into it.

Nice work.

Doesn't the screen elongate the picture (games are designed 4:3 not widescreen)?

Like the 7v low voltage LED - any chance of a simple diagram of what is needed to achieve that please?

I know that there are SOME games designed with a 16:9 option.

Looks nice! I can relate to your cartridge slot hole cutting. End result turned out great. Any chance you have any pics of the guts? Or just any more pics?

Also, why does it say connect a controller to socket 1? Having controller problems or something?

My feedback

Post by mchammer »

Just a quick update to answer some of ur questions. Thanks for all ur truly appreciated comments. Luv the feedback!

This pic shows two things - the no controller image fixed. In the original image with the no controller error, i hadn't fixed the internal controller board to the MB yet. Its connected now. Took that first pic on the first test run.
Bacteria: - the below pic shows mario and the image could be considered a little bit elongated but it really doesnt affect gameplay. I've tested goldeneye, mario smash bros, mario kart, zelda and seen no real problems. I will also post my cct diag for the battery indicator. Just gonna tidy it up for you.

Started with a plastic enclosure that looked like this:

After some LONG HARD WORK turned it into this:

Then slapped some paint on it to make this:

I have got more pics of the plastic enc from other angles if anyone interested.

Battery info, cart relocation and anything else i missed coming soon. late for work.

What LCD screen did you use and how much did it cost you? I'm shopping around for a good 7" screen and haven't found any I like yet.

I'm intrigued by your easy method for cartridge slot relocation - what is this voodoo magic you hint at?

That is a sweet case - well done, and the effort that went into it shows.

After watching the video, I have to say again: very nice. About that cart slot, I'm not sure exactly how secured it is, I hated it like that. Any problems?

Widescreen? N64? Awesome. :D Great job, man; not only is that a sweet screen, it's a slick little unit overall.
