Connect an N64 to a PSone screen via RGB (fixed!)

Post by limpport » Sat Oct 17, 2009 1:28 am

THIS DOES NOT WORK!!!!! I thought it worked in theory, but does not. I'm testing and experimenting with it, so I will be sure to update when I know exactly how it works.

So apparently this works perfectly fine. I just got it to work, and came back to update this post, and it was exactly the same  I probably didn't have the screen and N64 grounded together. So make sure they are!

Note: This will only work with revision 3 boards and earlier. Revision 4 boards still have the VDC-NUS chip, but the parts to get the c-sync were not put onto the board. If you can get the parts to fill in the missing ones on the Rev 4 board, then this should work.

Better colors and such than Composite.
Everything just looks better.

Rather than having all three colors (red, green, blue) running mashed together on wire, like composite (the yellow RCA plug), there is a separate wire for each color. Component is similar, but not exactly the same.

Basically what argelfraster said, better color and a pixel perfect picture (no blurring). It is the absolute best way to hook video up to a portable.

I thought the N64 required an amp for RGB.

EDIT - this

Is the amp Bino mentioned required?

If you try and try and still can't get it to work, it's fine to just go with composite. :P The difference is, really, very minuscule. And the PSOne screen has an excellent comb filter, too. There was a photo comparison around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.
