Well,I'm using a 12v 4500mah laptop battery (because it was free

) on my PSone (not PSX, the little one)
I'm sure basically any battery would work. When picking a battery, favor the milliamp rating over the voltage when it comes to RC battery packs, because you can easily knock down the voltage with resistors and regulators. (Not too sure about reducing the draw, though...)
Oh, and Ni-Cads STINK! Avoid them like the plague. After they've been recharged many times they start to wear out, and much sooner than Ni-Mh and L-IONs. Also, if you discharge and recharge Ni-Cads to about the same level over and over, they get a "memory effect" and will think that they can only charge up to that point.
So I'd go for Ni-Mh batteries. RadioShack has a few (I think) 9v 3000mah RC batteries that would be perfect for this use.
