Can you connect the PSone controller directly to a chip on the board? (like in Bens VCSp)

No, the button presses go through a chip on the PS1 controller that "compresses" the signals, and then into the PS1 mobo where the signals are "uncompressed"..

Then, theoretically, could you possibly connect the switches directly through to the mobo instead of through the compression chips? Theoretically... :?

I think you could. :) Just skip the encoder and decoder. Unless the decoders built into another chip, then your out of luck.
