question about transister for amplifying video

Post by CABBAGES »

Hi im new to all this stuff never really touched a soldering iron before untill i bought one the other day
I got some sort of video on this lcd i found lyin around my house and with a transister i just ripped out an old radio contorlled thingy. As you can see here http://media.putfile.com/nes its not quite right .
Now i know it could be dirty cartridge slot or cartridge but ive cleaned them and raised the pins up too. I was wondering could this be the transistor as i have no idea what kind it is ?

yeah...pulling random transistors and plugging them into something isn't usually a good idea. The majority of transistors in use are NPN, and have the same pinout, but that doesn't mean that it's guaranteed, or that it will have sufficient current gain. I'm assuming you're using the amplifier circuit found on the forums here (search). In which case you could use:

2N4401 or 2N2222 transistors
or...if you really had to, a 2N3904 would work, but you would need to adjust the 33ohm resistor to what looks good, because the gain is less than that of the other two choices.

Well...i couldnt actually see your video, so i'm assuming this will work :-)

Im using the amplifier circuit form bens book. I tryed to get a 2N4401 form maplins but they didnt have any and didnt know any alternative they could give me as they didnt have a chart or somethin. I will try get one of those other ones you mentiond tomorrow at maplins :D thanks.

Oh i dont know if it makes any difference but its a pal NES. Oh and the lcd screen im usin is a really small pustom lcd that needs 12v but im just usin that just now coz i found it in my room i will get a psone screen soon i think.

well if you're going to buy it specially anyway, i'd get the 2N4401. It has a higher dc current gain, so it should be able to amplify enough to run anything. You can get the 2N2222A for 0.06 a piece though :D
