New 160GB PS3 slim hardware

Post by low_budget » Thu Nov 18, 2010 11:32 pm

It seems the PS3 slim had another redesign recently. This would be the third (?) version of the PS3 slim. It has a different blu ray drive than the earlier CECH-2100A and CECH-2000A. It seems the blu ray drive's circuitry was moved to the motherboard with separate connectors for the laser, worm motor, spindle motor, and load/eject motor. This means it's near impossible to relocate the drive. The heatsink is different as well. Should still have the 45nm cell and 40nm RSX introduced with the CECH-2100A.

I'm currently making my third and final laptop using this model.

Unlikely, considering Sony has said over and over, from launch and up till now, that the PS3 will have a lifespan of at least 10 years.

We have at least 4 or 5 years left.

Then they deal with it. PS3 launched late, they know they are later in the cycle than everyone else. Why would they make a new system anytime soon? They would have to dump massive amounts of money into it. Sony does not make money on hardware, they make it on software. They just BARELY started making money on the PS3 right before the Slim came out, which is pretty terrible. At this point, they will want to milk it as long as they can, so people will keep buying games for the PS3.

It would make no business sense to do it, Sony would be shooting themselves in the foot. They will not come out with a new console just to "stay on top".

Oh, and game consoles have 5-10 year development cycles, too. It is pretty much set in stone.

only problem is that sony was probably the slowest to catch on that casual gamers and their sisters are a much larger and higher paying market compared to the nice bunch of hardcore gamers that play console compared to pc.
nintendo already built a too strong of name for itself in casual gamers for sony or microsoft to pass it in the next 2 decades. nintendo reigns supreme!

Present statement-statement challenged-defend statement with another statement-both statements destroyed-feign sarcasm
results:
misinformed posts.

Yeah, I thought people would discuss the new hardware. I thought it was interesting anyway.

In other news, my latest laptop (using this hardware) is almost ready. I will post it in the member showcase when I get all the detailing right. Then I will retire from making laptops. What a crappy business idea.

The measurements are pretty much the same as the other PS3 slim models.

whole system 11-1/16 x 10-1/2 x 2-3/16
motherboard 10-1/2 x 10-1/4 x 13/16
power supply 10-7/8 x 2-5/8 x 1-3/8
blu ray 7-1/2 x 5-3/4 x 1-1/2

BenHeck used the same version in his pelican case PS3.

That board is barely trimmed for RCP. You can take way more off.

Nobody came here to dump on Raizer, we were just having a discussion with him. You can't really judge this thread yourself, considering all of his posts have been deleted. :P No need to bump a thread like this, either, let sleeping dogs lie.
