collinE's 360 lappy finally finished! (not sold)

Post by collinE » Sun Dec 20, 2009 8:15 pm

I don't have a sexy name for it or anything, but here it is:

The dimensions of the beast are 16.75" x 11" x 3.5". I ended up using the same monitor Ben used on his first 360 Laptop which is the Westinghouse 1280 x 768 17" widescreen monitor.

The motherboard is a Falcon and I used an HDMI to DVI adapter to connect the video. I reworked the heatsinks using a similar method that Ben used in his Engadget tutorial, but used the extended heat pipe on both the GPU and CPU heatsink.

I did the 12v fan mod to three 40mm fans blow air out the back and a 30mm fan attached to each heatsink. Sounds like standing in a wind tunnel, but it keeps it cool. so 5 fans total.

The unit has a 20GB hard drive that was a special Halo edition, but the cover is gone now, so it really doesn't matter.

Case is made out of the fine Sintra/Komatex that is both strong and workable. Paint is Krylon Fusion.

I wish I could think of anything else, but my brain is pretty fried from building this.

Sexy laptop!

I like the red. It reminds me of my roommate's RE5 edition.

Thanks! I desperately want to take better pictures, but I can't find the charger for my camera to get better ones.

Also, I wanted to add that the ring of light was made with hot glue. I laid a piece of tape over the top, flipped it over, and filled the holes. When I removed the tape, it gave it a more cloudy look which lights up the whole section without concentrating it too much. The button on the ring of light is the end of a glue stick which had a hole drilled up the middle to let the light come up through it. maybe I'll have some cloudy acrylic next time, but for now.. yay hot glue!

Nice job. How was it to cut out the pieces yourself? Planning on selling it?

Hell. The only power tool I had access to was a dremel, so majority of the case making time was put towards making all the edges straight with a box cutter and file. :wtf: Next time, I'll find someone with a table saw or something.

I am actually. But my fantastic eBay idea was killed by the D-bags doing fake bids and phony sales. I'm not sure what to do now.

Have a local bid, if anyone in your area is interested in it.

Nice mod! Looks great, and like everyone else, I love the internal shots. The black and red is quite a bit different, but it looks good the way you did it.

As for Ebay, you have great pictures there, plus a link to a YouTube video. People are going to know it's not a fake. You could sell it if you wanted. If not, let us know what you do with it. Hopefully you can find it a good home.

Fantastic! :D It looks really clean and well built. I personally would have chosen another colour scheme but thats just a matter of taste I guess.

When I picked out the colors, I thought it would be universally loved. Crazy. I'll take a poll next time. :)

I'm working on getting some better pics. Maybe I'll borrow a camera. was using a 6.0mp Sony Cyber-shot. Don't get it.

Edit: techknott, your wish is my command

personally not so keen on the red, but i really-love the layout, love the heatsinks and also the pic with the original case from the 360 and screen on top f each other. Considering the fairly minimal flattening of the motherboard this is a nice thin laptop.
