low_budget's Model 2 laptop complete!

Post by low_budget » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:30 pm

I finished my third game console based laptop, I call it the Model 2. I really busted my ass making this, I hope the work paid off. It has many improvements over the Model 1: It's 3/4 in thinner due to the monitor's power supply moving to the bottom. It's lighter by 1.5 pounds due to the use of less aluminum and lighter components. The sound system has improved greatly and has a headphone jack. I also added component video, stereo audio, optical audio, and networking jacks for connection to a home TV. The plastic casing is stronger and can be completely removed with screws. I even made nice buttons for the monitor controls.

Latest PS3 hardware with 250GB hard drive
19 inch 720p widescreen LED monitor
2W stereo amplifier with headphone jack and pushbutton volume controls
.080 5052 aluminum base
1/8in polystyrene side walls; .093 top
TIG welded 6063 aluminum monitor frame
vacuum formed monitor back
McMaster Carr friction hinges
Blue LED lighting
Dimensions: 17-5/16 x 11-7/8 x 3-3/4 inches
Weight: 14 pounds

I really like how everything has its own connectors and is easy to dismantle and (if need be) replace parts in the future. Very cool.

Looks sick. I may just start making laptops of current-gen consoles instead of portables. Bigger market there.
Cheers,

I don't think there is a big market for these, but there probably is a bigger market for laptop current gen consoles than portables made from older systems.

I recently sold my third laptop (the model 2) for $1,200 on ebay. Now I have no laptops and do not plan on building more. Sweet! Now I have free time.
