15 minute project: PSU fan

Post by HBN » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:47 pm

Friend of mine gave me a dead 330 watt PSU. I'm still debating it is really dead, but it had a few "Items of Interest", which of course means "No matter if this thing works or not, I want these things out of it... I'll worry about replacing them later."

Items, of course, are the two heatsinks that I found inside, and an oddly translucent fan. Yes. The PSU's cooling fan is made out of light-blue colored translucent plastic. No idea why, as this PSU is anything but special. It's third-rate POS.

However the fan worked. Therein lies the project, which honestly would have taken less time if I could have paid full attention to it rather than being called away countless times (Which also caused the death of two of the components I was adding. Which pissed me the effing hell off because now I need to buy more...)

In the end it worked, and worked well. So without further ado... MORE CRAPPY WEBCAM PICS!! WOO!

As you can see, I added four blue LED's, at roughly 30k MCD each. Then I wired the whole deal together. Runs on 12vdc.

And I have no idea what to do with it.

maybe sell it on ebay?

It would look real cool in a desktop PC that had a window on the side. see through to the neon goodness.

I don't have the heart to sell it.

It would look neat on that kind of case. Or made a console casemod. How many consoles use a 12v line for cooling fans (If applicable, obviously.)?

the gamecube doesn't use it for the fan, but it has a 12v line

everything from that generation and up should be fine, pretty much

Actually, you're wrong :P The GC does use a 12v line for the fan (its a Nidec 12vDC fan). The power for the fan comes straight from the cable (inverter box).
